Manufactured Homes in Argos, Indiana: Living with a Septic System

Argos is a small town in southern Marshall County, and most homes outside it run on a private septic system. Our St. Joe and Grabill posts cover putting a well and septic in. This one is about living with the system once your manufactured home is lived in, because how you use it decides how long it lasts.
Know where it is
Ask your septic contractor for a drawing of the tank and the drain field, and keep it with your paperwork. Our Montpelier post covers what to keep. Mark the tank lid so you can find it under snow or grass.
What goes down the drain
- Only toilet paper and human waste in the toilet. No wipes, even ones labelled flushable.
- No grease or cooking fat in the sink. Wipe pans with a paper towel first.
- Go easy on harsh cleaners and bleach.
- Spread out laundry over the week rather than running every load on one day.
Pump it on schedule
Solids build up in the tank over time and need pumping out. How often depends on the tank size and how many people live in the home. Ask your septic contractor for a schedule, and write down each pumping date.
Protect the drain field
- Do not drive or park on it.
- Do not build a shed, deck or garage on top of it. Our Hudson post covers freestanding porches, decks and garages.
- Keep trees and large shrubs away from it. Our Hoagland post covers planting.
- Point gutter downspouts away from it. Our Bremen post covers drainage.
Signs of trouble
Slow drains in several fixtures, gurgling, a sewage smell, or wet, green patches over the field are worth a call to a septic professional straight away.
Common questions
Does a bigger household need a bigger system?
Often, yes. Systems are usually sized by bedroom count. Our Orland post covers this.
Do you install septic systems?
No. We sell and deliver the home. You hire your own contractors for the septic system and other site work.
