Manufactured Homes in Redkey, Indiana: Snow, Ice and Winter Access

Redkey is a small town in western Jay County, surrounded by flat, open farm ground where the wind moves snow into drifts. For a new manufactured home on a rural lot, the first big storm is a good test of how well the site was planned.
Who clears the driveway?
A county plow clears the road, not your lane. Decide before winter who will clear your driveway, whether that is you with a tractor or a blower, or someone you hire. Ask early, because many people who plow are booked by November.
Where does the snow go?
- Leave room beside the driveway to pile snow without blocking the view of the road.
- Do not pile it against the home, the skirting or the porch.
- Keep it off the septic field markers and the well cap so you can find them.
Drifts and the lie of the land
On open ground, snow drifts on the downwind side of anything in its path, including the home. Our Howe post covers siting the home on acreage, and our Decatur post covers wind. A windbreak planted far enough away can help. Our Hoagland post covers planting.
Steps, landings and vents
- Keep steps and landings clear and salted, and add a handrail if there is none.
- Clear snow from around any furnace or water heater vents on the outside wall.
- Keep the meter and any propane tank reachable for the reader and the delivery driver.
Before the first storm
Put flashlights, a few days of water and food, and a phone charger somewhere easy to reach. Know where the main water shut-off is. Our Kimmell post covers the rest of first-year care.
Common questions
Should I clear snow off the roof?
Do not climb onto the roof. If you are worried about a heavy load, call a professional.
Can the home be delivered in winter?
Often, but weather and ground conditions can delay delivery and site work. Plan with some room in the schedule.
